Patsy and Bek and Jacob came down for the day. Jacob wasn't in the house five minutes before he found my glasses and did a little mugging for the camera. Well, actually, maybe it was Herman that did the mugging.
Herman and Jacob stayed home with Dad while Patsy, Bek and I went to lunch at Panera's. It's next door to Ben and Jerry's but we just passed them by without a second look, and headed for my favorite thrift shop. After the thrift shop, we rounded out the day with the Dollar Tree. Bek filled her basket with all manner of things, while Patsy and I showed discretion, only making the most discerning choices.
We then took the back roads home, along the James River. When we arrived home we were surprised to find that Jacob was neither bleeding nor vomiting like the last two times Bek left him with Herman.
Herman and Jacob then went down to the pier at Deep Creek. After returning home they found some of the best fun a boy can possibly find on a hot August day...... a hose and a nozzle are objects of endless joy.
One of the greatest lessons of life....simple pleasures are always the best. This turned out to be one of the best days of my summer.

Jacob's Birthday Pictures
Jacob had a big birthday party in his very own back yard. There was a trampoline and cake and presents and friends and family and a beautiful, sunny day. What could be better? You can tell from the pictures that everyone had a wonderful time. Wish I could have gotten these up earlier, but I had a problem with the Kodak site. Photos taken by Patsy.

The Birthday Boy
The beautiful and pensive Sophie with the Mona Lisa smile. I love this photo. Love it. The skinned knee, the piercing eyes, the barely tamed hair. Fabulous. They're are so many photos of the "cute" little girl. This goes way beyond that. Look at that face.

The Birthday Boy Steps Up To Bat...
The youngest guest....baby Lindsay...aaahhhh! Peaceful!

And what is a birthday without the gifts?
A pirate and his wench!
...and guess which pirate found the rum? She even had a crutch and a wooden leg.

Jacob Turns Four
I can hardly believe it. Jacob turns four today. The years have passed so fast; it takes my breath away. Happy birthday, Jacob. We love you.
.
A wish for Jacob
.
blue skies on which to sail
blue skies on which to sail
enough space in which to fail
a million stars to light your path
arms to hold you in the aftermath
.
sunshine to brighten your day
sunshine to brighten your day
a love for work and a lust for play
wisdom to recognize wrong when all others say right
courage to do right when all others choose might
.
strength to go out on your own
memories to bring you back home
the deep kind of love that sustains
a song in your heart with a soulful refrain
