Herman's Birthday Party

On Sunday Jacob brought his MaMaw and Mom to our house to celebrate Herman's 62nd birthday.

As usual, the girls went to lunch and shopped, and the guys stayed home. Jacob and H tried to fish, but the creek was too muddy from all the rain we've had recently, but never fear, they found other adventures.

It's springtime. As everyone knows, that's the time for love. This is the time of year the female snapping turtles leave the creek and climb up our hillside to find a place to lay their eggs. Jacob and Herman had a close encounter of the snapping kind, and here are the pictures to prove it.

Patsy bought a rocket for Jacob and we went up into the garden to make that bad boy fly. It was a slow start, but Herman and Patsy finally prevailed, and here are the pictures.

Herman preparing to launch.
You can tell by Herman's quick response that that sucker was flying! Look over his head and to the left and you can see it. Okay, you have to look really hard, but it's there.

The remains ~

A boy and his rocket ship!

Jacob brought cupcakes for Herman and a special gift. Irish Spring soap! Herman will hang it in the garden this summer to try to keep the deer from eating our vegetables. They love our vegetables, but they hate the scent of Irish Spring soap, and the best part is that the soap doesn't hurt the deer. Jacob also gave Herman watermelon seeds and Herman will plant them soon. I hope they grow because I love watermelon. Mr. M is reading the directions about how to plant and care for them as I'm writing this. Mr. M is a gardener of the first rank and loves seeds of any sort more than life itself. I guess they are pretty miraculous when you think of it. A homely little nubbin that grows into an unbelievable plant or fruit or vegetable. Magic!

I just wanted to add this photo I found on the internet so Jacob could see how the baby turtles will look when they hatch. Notice the quarter in the guy's hand for scale.

Look What Came In The Mail Today!

I ask you - ladies and gents, is this the most beautiful card you've ever seen? I love it, and I love Jacob. This card actually made me feel better. I'm not kidding. Thank you Jacob and Patsy. I love you both.

I Can Ride My Bike!

Herm really looks forward to Jacob's visits. I look forward to them too, but Herm can hardly wait for him to arrive. The man loves him with giant love, and they do boy things together.

As usual, the girls went to lunch, and then a little shopping was in order for Mamaw. Victoria's Secret is a religious experience for her. She was fitted for a new undergarment. Mom got a few new things also. Why not? She was there and there were things to be bought. What else can a girl do?

While we were gone, Jacob and Herm caught a big fish and lots of minnows, and two blue crabs that were hard shells. I think the minnow trap that we got Jacob for his birthday was a good investment. It has already paid for itself in fun. Mr. M. got into the act too, getting Herm to bring his tackle box upstairs, he shared some of his tackle with Jacob.

Jacob had a big surprise for us. He brought his bike with him, and showed us how well he could ride it. He was fantastic. Look out Lance Armstrong!

It was another great, fun filled day. They had to leave before five because Jacob goes to kindergarten now. He has to go to bed early so he can get up early in the morning to catch the big, yellow bus and ride three blocks to his school.

Herman told me that Jacob said, "Herman, I think this is the best day ever. We caught a big fish and two crabs.

We love you, Jacob!

Jacob and Herman Go Fishing

Jacob and his mom and mamaw came for a visit on Sunday. They brought cup cakes, a beautiful hanging basket, and cards for me. It was my birthday celebration. Jacob and Herm stayed here and did a little fishing and swinging while Patsy, Bek, and I went to lunch at Outback.

If you'll indulge me, I'll wax philosophical for just an second. I once had a friend who told me that life is very hard and gets harder as we get older. She said that the trick is to recognize joy when it arrives and take note of it. It's a simple principle and can change your life if you let it. Jacob brings joy to us - simple as that.

MaMaw can beat your butt!

I just finished a phone conversation with Patsy, more widely known as Jacob's MaMaw. While we were talking, someone called her on her other phone. You could only know how ridiculous that phrase sounds if you were alive in the fifties. Other phone? Who ever heard of having more than one phone. Golly, we used to have something called a party-line when I was a kid.

A party-line was when several families - parties - shared the same phone line. So if we picked up the receiver of our phone and heard Miss Jeanette talking to Miss Franny, we knew we were suppose to put the receiver back on the base, and pretend we hadn't heard them gossiping about Miss Snowdie's tasteless, new hairdo. The key phrase here is suppose to. Shamefully, we occasionally sat quietly and listened. Besides being great entertainment (the first reality shows) the party line often fed the grapevine, on which information traveled faster than the speed of light. This is a categorical, scientific absolute.

Anyway, you can see what I'm saying here. Technically, we used to only have half of a phone, and now most people have at least two phones. Crazy!

...but I digress.

As I was saying, Patsy and I were chatting when Patsy's "other phone" rang. She asked me to wait while she took the call. It was Bek. I guess I should preface the following by explaining that Patsy kept Jacob for a few days while Bek was on a work-vacation (is that an oxymoron???) on some exotic island with one of her best friends, Donna. Jacob told Bek that while he was staying with Patsy, she told him...and I quote..."I'm your mama's mama and I can whip her butt any time I want to."

It seems that at the tender age of four years, Jacob has a full grasp of the hierarchy of maternal relationships. He has figured out that there just may be someone higher on the totem pole than his mom.

"MaMaw can whip your butt any time she wants to!" .....implicit in this statement from a four year old is...... and don't you forget it, Mom!

Patsy, of course, claims that she never said anything of the sort. That's her story and she's stickin' to it. It appears that Jacob is stickin' to his story too.

Bek, I'm waiting for pix of your trip so I can post them. If I don't get them in a timely fashion I'll call Jacob's MaMaw and ....

Happy Birthday, Herman!

Patsy, Bek and Jacob arrived yesterday. We celebrated Herman's birthday, but first....

It was a rainy, raw and blustery day, but we didn't let it stop us from having a good time. Jacob and Herman explored the creek, and the construction of the bridge/dam beside our house. Patsy, Bek and I went to lunch at a place we had never tried before - Cheddar's. Then we went shopping. Bek bought a few things for her trip. After we returned home, I snapped a few pix of Jacob. As usual, we had a great time.

Happy Birthday Herman!

On Top Of The World ~

Jacob brought Mom and MaMaw down for a visit on Sunday.

We hadn't seen Jacob in months and I believe that makes it a little easier to notice changes. When you see someone everyday, the changes are gradual and more subtle. On this visit, I noticed more significant changes in Jacob than on any other visit since we moved down here on Dec. 8, 2006.

At this age you notice that a child has gotten a little taller and seems a little slimmer. The physical is always the most apparent change. Very interesting to note was the difference in his movements. They are becoming masculine. You can actually distinguish the difference in his movements from those which a little girl would exhibit. When he brings his arm back to throw a rock, it simply has "boy" written all over it.

The big changes this time ran much deeper though. He has matured in many ways since the last time we saw him. He seems to have more self control, and he's capable of determining what others are expecting of him, and carrying through with what they want (when he wants to), and he seems to want to much more often than six months ago.

He has truly left babyhood behind, that place where the child is completely unaware of self. He has become self aware - conscious of how others view him. He tells jokes to entertain, enjoying the fact that he has the power to make others laugh, therefore make others happy. He gets a real kick out of this.

The biggest change of all is his awareness of the feelings of others, and his willingness to change his behavior for their sake - when he feels this is warranted. And again, he does this more often than ever before.

He is only four and you can see the makings of a kind heart, a heart that is capable of putting others before self. It's kind of amazing that you can see it at such a young age. He's still a little boy - still in the making - but so much of the foundation is already there. I wish every parent could realize how much development occurs in these first few years.

I feel happy for Jacob. He's growing in the right direction as he leaves babyhood and toddlerdom behind, but it's still a bittersweet moment when a child becomes socialized and civilized and learns about compromise. It's everything you want for a child because they must gain these skills in order to navigate successfully in the world, yet... There are always growing pains, but sometimes I believe they're felt most acutely by the adults who love the child than the child himself. It seems to me that Jacob has crossed a significant threshold, and the adults in his life will now be looking back through that door, as he only looks forward.

The following photos show how much fun we had. Patsy and Bek and I went to lunch. When we returned we found a very dirty boy and a very happy old guy. As always, they never seem to have difficulty finding fun when they're together. They found an old board for a seat, threw a rope over a tree, and created a swing. Now that's a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon.

They walked down to the creek to see the BIG machines. The City is raising the road because it floods when ever we have a nor'easter or hurricane. The photos tell the story of a very happy afternoon. Enjoy!

The photo above was taken in September 2006 during a nor'easter. Hopefully this won't happen after they finishing raising the road.

Let's grab a rope and throw it over a tree and have some fun! Yes, sometimes it really is that simple.

I know the following photo has a lot of motion blur, but what you're looking at is undiluted joy. We seldom see it in life, and almost never capture it on film. So, I had to include it.

Just hangin' and swingin' with my bud.
