To faux or not to faux.....that is the question.
Since Jacob was a baby, I've always kept a banana in the house. He loves them and has come to expect one to be here for him whenever he arrives on the scene. Recently, however, his proclivity seems to have changed. He has been asking for an apple instead. I usually have the red delicious and the granny smiths on hand, and I always ask him which color he would like. He always chooses the red.
On Wednesday a friend from Maryland came for a visit and brought a hostess gift of beautiful faux apples to me. I immediately removed all the apples and bananas from the container in which I have always had them. I replaced them with the faux apples. I then put some of the real apples and bananas in another bowl for Jacob.
When he arrived last night he noticed the faux apples in the usual container. I explained that they were not real. I told him they were fake or faux. He understood and I offered him a real apple, and he took a bite of it and went on his merry way. I thought he accepted it pretty well, even though I could see him eying the faux ones. They looked so much prettier than the real ones.
Later in the evening as he walked by the faux apples, unaware that anyone was watching him, he gave them a quizzical glance, and I heard him say to himself, "Those are real apples!" I could see where it was going and reminded him they were not real. Even though he did not dispute it, he looked at me with doubt, and I feel certain that this issue will be revisited at another time.
I only hope it's before he takes a big bite out of one of them.
